What a great summer! 50 students joined us daily for "virtual" summer camp, practicing piano, playing music theory, math, science and spelling games with dozens of volunteers from around New Jersey. Their worlds were expanded as they met with Ola the data scientist from Canada, studied art with Kirsten and Fran from the Newark Museum and performed with musicians from the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. We're grateful for our partners who open up doors for our students and excited to see what the fall will bring!

Keys and the Orchestra

Jaziah almost missed the concert because she didn’t have a white shirt and Thaila sobbed uncontrollably because she couldn’t speak English.

But that was years ago.

This summer, Jaziah and Thaila who are now in third and fifth grade respectively, along with 9 other students from the El Sistema New Jersey Alliance (ESNJA), were poised and confident as they played in a virtual concert with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO).

While this event marks the next evolution of “Simple Gifts” co-composed by Maestro Robert butts and their very own teacher, Elijah Souels, we believe the true importance lies in the profile of those who came together to make this project possible.

First and foremost is the involvement of the NJSO, who have long utilized their collective musical prowess to cultivate the young classical musicians of New Jersey. Stepping beyond the masterclasses they run, these highly skilled musicians chose to take the virtual stage alongside these students, offering them a foyer into the professional classical music world. This is a world normally financially or culturally out of reach for many inner city children. However, it did not matter where they were born, their socioeconomic status, or how well they had yet mastered their instrument. For the moment, they were all part of the same orchestra playing the same piece.

“Bravi, Tutti!! I’m STILL crying tears of joy”, said Marshell Jones Kumahor, Vice President of NJSO’s Education and Community Engagement. Yes! Bravi Tutti!

This Is Love In Action

Ms. Larkins teaches the Pre-Kindergarten class at South Street School. Two of our students, Onya and Jaziah, were in her class when they were in PreK.

Last month, when Ms. Larkins heard that the piano kids had not been able to practice together since the beginning of the pandemic, she volunteered to pick up the girls from their homes in Pennington Court and bring them to the other side of Newark to practice in her daughter’s backyard.

When we arrived at the house, her daughter Ashaki had already laid out the electrical cord, cleared the yard of bugs and brought out chairs for us to use. Ms. Larkins stayed to listen to the kids practice. Ashaki’s brother, Ray even brought out popsicle for the children as a treat after the 2-hour practice session!

So what's next? An outdoor concert of course! (stay tuned for more details)

A Special Performance

Finally, enjoy this thrilling performance of Rachmaninoff's Corelli Variations which our Executive Director, Jee-Hoon Krska, presented at the BONJ 2020 Summer Festival Concert.
